Ways in which water can be contaminated

  • Water is used both at home and in school.

  • We use water to cool ourselves.

  • We also use water to clean ourselves and clean items at home.

  • Water that is contaminated is not good for drinking.

  • Contaminated water is unhealthy and spreads diseases.


Water is contaminated in the following ways

  1. Dung and urine from animals.

  2. Washing and bathing in water sources.

  3. People urinating and defecating in water.

  4. People washing vehicles in water.

  5. Soil erosion.

We can make water safe for drinking by the following methods.


Boiling-it kills germs

A piece of cloth.

A sieve

Improvised water filters


Activities at home where water is used.

  1. Washing clothes.

  2. Washing hands.

  3. Washing dishes.

  4. Washing vegetables and fruits.

  5. Bathing.

  6. Watering animals.

  7. Watering crops (irrigation)


Ways water can be reused

We can reuse water in the following ways:

  1. Washing toilets.

  2. Watering plants.

  3. Sprinkling on earthen surfaces to reduce dust.

  4. Cleaning outdoor surfaces
